The crew travelled their separate ways to end up at the Wasa Marina in Stockholm on 21 July and spent our first day provisioning Pegasus.
We found a charming Restaurant recommended by the previous crew where we ate stewed reindeer. In total, three days were spend in and around Stockholm and we were absolutely entranced by the Wasa in its museum.
On our last day here we travelled about 20 miles up the main channel towards Vaxholm to get the feel of the archipelago, before turning round and returning to the Wasa Marina.
Pegasus then started her return trip from Stockholm to Oxelosund, and we wove our way between various islands in the archipelago visiting Dalaro, Uto, Nynamshamn and Trosa.
A highlight of the trip was piloting Pegasus from the Halvkaks-sundet to the Baggens-fjarden through the narrow Baggens-staket, where despite the overcast and threatening sky, we had virtually no wind.
Dalaro was a charming Gasthamn, with a newly built facilities block that included a sauna, but quite a long walk to the supermarket.
On the Sunday we had a glorious sail under clear blue skies to the island of Uto – which was quite congested, so we had to moor up in the southern harbour.
From Uto we sailed to Nynamshamn which is quite a busy port with ferries going to the offshore nature reserve, and the following day had another interesting trip weaving our way down various sounds and between islands on our way to Trosa.
Trosa is a beautiful old town with quite a modern marina. They also had a sauna here and most of the crew decided to have a go.
The last day’s travel was to Oxelosund – an industrial port which has the distinction of not freezing up in winter.
It was considered strategically important and during the cold war, numerous defences were constructed here. They are redundant now, but we took the opportunity of visiting one of the underground bunkers and gun emplacements that had been excavated from the solid granite cliffs.
