We had arranged to pick the boat up in Stockholm at Wassehamn Marina.
The Vassa Museum is close by and we visited this the evening before we set sail. The Vassa was a boat commissioned by the king to wage war on the Poles. Unfortunately the design of the galleon left much to be desired and it sank on its maiden voyage before it had hardly left the harbour. The standard stability test in those days was for the crew, of a few hundred, to run from side to side ten times. In this case they only managed three time when it had to be halted because it was not safe, never the less the boat set sail with tragic results.

We stopped at five venues during our week beginning and finishing at Stockholm. One of the high lights was the sail to and from Mariehamn on the island of Aland which is in Finland. The other was a visit to Ingmarso. This is an unspoilt spot with no facilities, no shops, no harbour master and well off the beaten track . We moored bows to and dropped the kedge anchor. We were the only non Swedish boat moored there and it was wonderful. We made a detour on the way to Vaxholm to pass the 'Abba island' of Vistera where the group had holiday homes and composed much of their music.
