Leg 3 Cruising Enkhuizen to Delfzijl 4 - 11 June

Skipper Brian Barnes
The first morning was spent in the Zuider Zee Museum in Enkhuizen, a living museum where volunteers dress in costume of the period in the early part of the 20th Century when proposals were first mooted about the enclosure of the open sea. It appeared this wasn't seen by the locals as a very popular decision.
After lunch on that first day they set off to sail a comparatively short trip to Lemmer, a port on the Eastern side on the Ijsselmeer.
From Lemmer to Harlingen a busy port in the Waddenzee. The whole population of The Netherlands appeared to be there that Sunday. There were boats, big and small, crowds and brass bands everywhere and trying to moor in the Noorderhaven was very tricky and quite exciting.
The next stage was to visit Terschelling and then to progress along the outside of the Friesian Islands to Lauwersoog on the mainland. Unfortunately this seventy mile run was spoilt by having an Easterly wind virtually on the nose for the whole trip.
Before finishing in Delfzijl the boat managed to visit the German Island of Borkum. A restaurant here was dedicated to Radio Caroline and Radio Veronica, Caroline's Dutch equivalent, where even the waiter had photos of pop groups on his waistcoat.
It would have been nice to have sailed a bit further East and followed through in the footsteps of Erskine Childers but unfortunately time was against the idea.
Apart from the one day motoring against the wind from Terschelling to Lauwersoog , the rest of the week offered good sailing and no rain
